About Me

My name is Sammy Lui. I am a Stony Brook University graduate, graduated in 2019 and a Computer Information Systems major with a specialization in digital media and with minors in Creative Writing and Digital Art. I have a Unity Certified User Programmer and Unity Certified Associate Programmer Licenses. I am looking for a career as a game programmer or game designer. This is my work portfolio site that holds a collection of my works and has summaries about the thought processes and inspirations I put into them. My collection holds my works in game development, web development, digital art and others. I designed this site with video game and comic book aesthetics in mind, using a bright color choices and highlighting words of importance.

My career experiences are in game programming and design, web development, digital art, social media and marketing. My goal is to become a video game programmer and to direct my own video games. My aspiration is to make great story experiences because great stories can entertain and enrich people's lives. Video games are good mediums of storytelling because video games don't have a fixed time length like movies or potentially too much time like with television series with 20+ episode length seasons.  You can have a story without being limited to either 2 hours or without being forced to make a certain number of episodes, outside of time constraints from development time. My other aspiration is to make thrilling action, that is fast-paced that really test my players' reflexes, for my games because I love action movies.

I am a programmer with more than 5+ years of experience in Java object oriented programming, HTML, CSS and JavaScript programming. I have 2+ years of experience using the Unity and processing engines. I started out game development using processing because of its ease of use. I am also a digital artist with 5+ years of experience in Adobe Creative Suite, a traditional artist and a script writer skilled in Microsoft Office and Celtx.

Before applying for careers in the video game industry and after I graduated, I worked as a web developer for several companies. Currently, I work as a web developer at Kwant.Ai, a company that is creating an app that facilitates construction organization with schedules that update in real time.

At Stony Brook University, I was heavily involved in extracurriculars related to game development. I was the president of the Stony Brook Game Developers Club, an independent club that demos game-making software such as Unity and teaches game design. As president, I conducted demos with Unity and lectures on aspects of game design such as character design and narrative design.

As a game developer, I focus on making fast-paced games, particularly 3D action games. I have made both 3D action games as well as other games such as shoot 'em ups. I focus on and love making enemies, particularly bosses, because I like flexing my creative muscles and I want to make powerful enemies that will entertain and challenge players. With my games, Beast Dominion, Mystic Bard Remake and my upcoming game, War of Champions, I focused on giving bosses layered attack sequences that will punish players if they play recklessly. In War of Champions, because I loved making bosses, I give my player characters boss like traits, such as using wards, summoning monsters to attack for them, and super speed that allows you to speed through an arena in seconds. These abilities are usually reserved for bosses, because they are too powerful in the hands of protagonists and because protagonists tend to be more straightforward and honest.

My hobbies are making traditional art and developing video games. My preferences for video games are fantasy and sci-fi genres and role playing games.
